New Zealand’s Super Volcano

Taupo Eruption

Lake Taupo is the largest freshwater lake in New Zealand. While a scenic and serene place toady, it is the location of Earth’s most destructive volcano in the last 70,000 years.

Humans didn’t live in New Zealand when it erupted around the year 186 AD. That explosion measured 7 on the VEI (Volcanic Explosivity Index). Prior to that around 26,500 years ago, Taupo erupted with an explosivity index of 8. Eight is categorized as a super-eruption. This eruption formed the lake that we see today.
