Volcanic Lake Taupō from a Māori perspective

Volcanic Lake Taupo

Lake Taupō is really a volcanic depression that was created by an eruption 26,000 years ago. A smaller eruption but still huge took place about 1,800 years ago. The sound of the latter eruption and ensuing dramatic sunsets were noted in Chinese and Roman records.

While the last two eruptions took place before human settlement of New Zealand, nevertheless, the lake is still part of Māori mythology.
